Prosecutors won’t seek death penalty for Nathan Summerfield
News Journal staff report
MANTEO, N.C. — Authorities do not plan to seek the death penalty against the man suspected of killing an Ashland woman, according to published reports.
Nathan Summerfield is being held without bail in the Dare County Jail. He is charged with the murder of Lynn Jackenheimer, 33, who was last seen alive July 3, 2012. Her body was found July 14 on Hatteras Island, N.C.
Summerfield appeared in court Monday, according to the Outer Banks Voice.
“The state is not proceeding capitally in this case,” Assistant District Attorney Lauren Arizaga told Superior Court Judge J.C. Cole.
Arizaga did not offer a reason for the decision, the Voice reported.
A trial date has not been scheduled for Summerfield, though Jackenheimer’s mother told the News Journal last week that it could be sometime in the spring of 2014.
Summerfield was Jackenheimer’s estranged boyfriend and the mother of her son Leland, now 4. Jackenheimer also has a 14-year-old daughter. They had been vacationing over the Fourth of July holiday when Jackenheimer disappeared.
Summerfield returned the children to Ashland on July 8, but Jackenheimer was not with them. He was arrested Aug. 15 at a motel off Interstate 76 in Wadsworth, ending a five-week manhunt.
Ruth NalleyExcuse me, but that is pretty sad because he had no remorse for her or her family. Why put him in prison; he deserves the death penalty!
